An interesting phlomis for the fact that the flowers are perfumed. Of the twenty or so species and cultivars that I grow, this is the only phlomis with a perfume. The scent is similar to jasmine, apparent during the warmth of the day, and is light enough that a couple of metres away the fragrance is no longer tangible. I grow it beside a path so that its perfume can surprise passersby. Will reach just over a metre but responds well to pruning so I give it a hard prune after flowering and keep it to a more compact 60cm high and wide. I also grow it in part shade at the foot of Marri trees and it continues to flower beautifully despite the more shady location. A terrific phlomis amenable to the variable requirements of home gardens.
