Sonchus hierrensis is one of the smaller growing shrub Sonchus, reaching a modest 1.5m tall although it may grow slightly taller in rich soils. Typical glabrous mature leaves although new foliage is tomentose. The multi-headed inflorescence are produced in late winter to early spring and last into late spring. Some new shoots may be produced at the base of the stem but these can be removed if a single trunk is preferred. Semi-deciduous to fully deciduous over summer in dry soils. Makes an excellent accent plant in arid style and succulent gardens, or even as a winter shrub among winter deciduous plants. Full winter sun is best.
