Don't let the common name put you off this salvia because it makes an excellent garden plant. Similar to the nemerosa species with basal foliage and inflorescence produced from within the foliage, and also similar flowers. However stepposa grows slightly taller, reaching around 60cm in flower. Purple flowers with blue undertones are borne from late spring throughout summer. A good choice for continuing the show after Salvia Shangri-La finishes, or pair it with Carex testacea for contrasting colour. Happily tolerates some afternoon shade without affecting flowering.
