If you only grow one phlomis, monocephala should be it. A smaller shrub reaching around 40cm high and wide, it maintains foliage all over the shrub with just a light trim after flowering is finished. Typical phlomis flowers although monocephala has a distinctly darker top petal, with ochre tones providing a distinction to the typical yellow flower colour. It is however, when the weather warms, that monocephala begins to shine with golden hairs over the leaves and stems. It gives the plant an eye-catching golden hue, and this lasts until the weather cools and the foliar hairs relax, not longer needing to protect the foliage from desiccating dry winds. Grows best in full sun.
