Poa labillardieri 'Kingsdale'
Poa 'Kingsdale' is one of my favourite native grasses; quick growing, dry tolerant, medium sized (approximately 60cm H and W), happy in sun to dappled shade and very floriferous. However as it is evergreen, the gradual build up of old foliage perplexes many a gardener! Annually raking through the foliage to remove spent leaves can be done and there are gardeners that successfully cut it to the ground after 3 years to clean out the old growth. I prefer to leave the aged foliage, allowing the grass to gradually change from green to tawny-silver as the old growth begins to dominate. By this time it is likely to have produced a couple of new seedlings nearby, and these can be used to replace the mature plant when desired. I find it beautiful in all stages of maturity and given it reaches a mature size within around 18 months, it is easy to replace, or use it as a quick filler for new garden beds until the permanent plantings mature.
