Pennisetum alopecuroides; Cenchrus purpurascens (Swamp foxtail grass; Fountain grass)
Recent years have seen a number of Pennisetum alopecuroides cultivars released onto the market, each slightly different in size or awn colouring. I have grown many of these but I can't see any substantial improvement on the species. To my eye, the species has the most elegant shape, size and awn colouring plus it copes really well with wet or dry locations. The cool winters in the Perth hills do not trouble it, and it will continue to flower during this time. As it's evergreen in mild climates, give it a good rake through in early spring to remove old foliage and spent flowers, and if desired it can be divided at this time. Grows well in full sun to part shade. Does tolerate dry conditions but looks best with a weekly water during the hot WA summers. 0.8mH x 0.8mW
