Eucomis comosa (Slender pineapple lily; Pineapple lily)
While Eucomis comosa is typically winter dormant, the mild winters of Perth even in the hills, results in it remaining mostly evergreen. Given its preference for a sheltered location in dappled shade, I have found that the protection of surrounding shrubs means, at the worst, it is semi-deciduous. So it makes a great plant for underplanting beneath trees and it copes well with root competition. If well watered during summer it grows quickly and within a few years provides an attractive weed suppressing ground cover. Also excellent in pots. It can be used instead of Arthropidium, especially if you want to avoid the dense root mass that Arthropodium creates over time. Foliage reaches approx 50cm high (shorter in sandy soils) and inflorescence to 1m. Dappled shade to early morning sun during summer, in winter full sun is fine.
